I spy a zebra!! Wait...that is me!

Yikes. I can not believe I did this to my hair!! I should have known better. I DID know better.

It all started on Saturday. I decided on a whim that I needed my hair cut. This was true. The last cut I had gotten was when I was still pregnant with Donovan and let's be honest...it was a tiny trim not a cut. My hair had gotten pretty long. It would take forever to wash and dry and straighten and usually not 10 minutes later, I would have spit up, peanut butter or smushed crackers all in it. I don't have to tell you how bad spit up formula smells.

Needless to say, my hair usually ended up in a ponytail most days. I wanted a change! Something less time consuming and fresh. So off I go to the salon Saturday. As the guy was shampooing my hair he asked, "Are we doing a trim or some major cutting today?" I thought for a moment and figured why not. Major cutting it was. I thought I was going to pass out with that first snip but as he continued to cut, the better it felt! I loved the end result. It is a lot shorter than I had planned but it is cute. At least this is what I'm telling myself. My hair grows quickly. Not a big deal.

Fast forward to last night. We needed groceries and diapers and decided to take a trip to the place I love to hate, Walmart. I ended up on the hair color aisle with a box of Frost and Design highlights by Loreal. The box said "caramel highlights".

After dinner I excitedly opened the box and put on that horrid cap with the holes and started the tedious process of pulling hair strands out with that crochet hook thingy. Two hours later, I was ready to frost! I slapped that goop on my head and set the timer on my phone and sat down to watch the Oscars.

An hour later, everyone is asleep except me and my hair is ready to rinse! I go in the bathroom and look in the mirror and about fell out. It was ugly. I'm talking tears in my eyes ugly. I had a feeling this would happen. But I ignored my better judgement. My hair was brown with yellow/orangish stripes. Oh my Gah.

I was so mad and tired so I just pulled it up and went to bed. Crying.

This morning, Josh was laughing at me when I woke up. He started laughing harder as I got more upset. Apparently, me looking like a zoo animal and bitching about it is hilarious.

I am going to dye it back to plain old brown tonight and I am praying (begging) that it goes back to normal. I will let you know.

Because I love embarrassing myself, here is a pic of my hair this morning. I'm still in denial.

  1. Honestly, I think it looks adorable! Really!!! Maybe just go with a lighter highlight color next time!!

I remember once going to a new stylist and asking for golden highlights (my hair is a light brownish color...kinda mousy in its natural state) and I ended up with grayish-green stripes in my hair. Oh. My. Gosh. I wanted to crawl in a hole and die.

Needless to say, I found a new stylist who I've been going to for the last 3 years and I love how she highlights my hair. She told me that people with naturally brown hair usually end up with an ashy-type color if they try to go too golden. Who knew, right?

  3. Oh no, Helene! Grayish-green stripes. I thought stuff like that only happened to me! :-)
You should see it when it is down all the way. Some strands are orange, some yellow and some are half blonde half yellow. It is almost comical it is so horrendous. I will for sure try darker highlights if I ever try it again.

  4. Oops!

That's why I could never dye my own hair. The same thing would happen to me, I'm sure of it.

    1. Take me as a cautionary tale! Ha. I would definitely not encourage it after my experience.

  5. I think it looks ok. I just did the same thing to mine and I was scared at first but I left it and love it now. :) Good luck with whatever you choose.
